Getting Dressed for Big School Part One

When I was twelve, my female parent said to me, «I've enrolled y'all at Marlborough and Repton. Which would you like to go to?»

Both were famous Public Schools, just that was all I knew about them. «Repton», I said. «I'll go to Repton». Information technology was an easier give-and-take to say than Marlborough.

«Very well», my female parent said. «You lot'll go to Repton.»

Nosotros were living in Kent then. Repton was up in the Midlands, near Derby, and some 140 miles abroad to the north.

On the day of my divergence, I had to get dressed for the part. I had been to London with my mother the week before to purchase the school clothes, and I remember, how shocked I was when I saw the outfit which I was expected to wear.

«I tin can't peradventure go about in those!» I cried. «Nobody wears things like that!»

«Are you sure y'all haven't made a mistake?» my mother said to the shop assistant.

«If he's going to Repton, madam, he must wear these clothes», the assistant said firmly.

And now this amazing fancy dress was all laid out on beside my bed waiting to be put on. «Put it on», my mother said. «Hurry upwards or you'll miss the train».

«I'll look like a complete idiot if I put it on», I said. My mother went out of the room and left me to it. With immense reluctance I began to dress.

Part Two

First there was a white shirt with a detachable white collar. Around the collar I tied a black tie, using an ordinary tie knot.

Then came the trousers and the braces. The trousers were black with sparse gray lines running down them. I buttoned the braces on to the trousers, six buttons in all, and so I put on the trousers and fixed the braces to the correct length.

I put on a brand new pair of black shoes and laced them up.

Now for the waistcoat. This was also black and information technology had twelve buttons downwards the front end and two piffling waistcoat pockets on either side, one above the other. I put it on and did upwardly the buttons, starting at the meridian and working down.

All this was bad plenty for a boy who had never before worn anything better than a pair of shorts and a blazer. But the jacket put the lid on it. It wasn't really a jacket, it was a sort of tailcoat, and it was without a doubt the most ridiculous garment I had ever seen. Like the waistcoat, it was jet black and made of a heavy material. In the forepart the two sides of it met only at the point. Hither at that place was a single push and this had to be done up. From the button downwards, the lines of the coat separated and came together over again at the backs of the knees, forming a pair of «tails». Besides, when you lot walked, these tails flapped against your legs. Feeling similar an undertaker'south apprentice in a funeral parlour, I crept downstairs.

My sisters shrieked with laughter when I appeared. «He can't go out in those!» they cried. «He'll be arrested by the constabulary when they come across him!»

«Put your chapeau on», my mother said, handing me a stiff wide-brimmed harbinger hat with a blueish and black band effectually it. I put information technology on and did my all-time to await dignified. The sisters barbarous all over the room laughing.

My mother got me out of the house before I lost my nervus completely and together we walked through the hamlet to the station.

«Nobody's taking the slightest notice of you», my mother said as we walked through High Street.

And curiously enough nobody was.

«I accept learnt 1 affair about England», my mother went on. «It'southward a country in which men love to vesture uniforms and eccentric apparel. Two hundred years ago their apparel were fifty-fifty more than eccentric than they are today. Think how lucky you are. You don't have to article of clothing a wig on your caput and ruffles on your sleeves!»

«I nevertheless experience stupid,» I said.
